Better for All: A Gift Box Inspired by Dancing Lions

Combining Tradition and Modernity in Packaging Design

This gift box, designed specifically for the Chinese New Year, stands out with its vibrant red outer packaging, symbolizing the joy and excitement of the festive season. The opening mechanism of the box mimics the structure of a traditional Chinese double door, adding an element of surprise and delight for the recipient. Upon unfolding, a captivating illustration featuring dancing lions, flying fairies, and lanterns comes into view, symbolizing auspiciousness and good fortune.

What sets this gift box apart is not just its visual appeal, but also its commitment to sustainability. Made from eco-friendly paper and ink, it adheres to the principles of environmental responsibility, ensuring a positive impact on the planet.

The interactive nature of the design adds an extra layer of engagement for the user. The dancing lion-shaped magnetic sticker, used for both decoration and securing the box, can be repurposed as a refrigerator sticker after removal. Opening the gift box reveals a Chinese-style illustration, evoking the joy of opening a door, a common auspicious phrase associated with the Chinese New Year. Inside the box, recipients will find red packets, couplets, and a calendar, all adorned with the same illustration elements, creating a cohesive and visually appealing experience.

The project, which began in Shenzhen, China, in October 2020, was completed in the same city a month later. The manufacturing of the gift boxes took place in November 2020, ensuring a timely release for the Chinese New Year celebrations.

The design team, led by Creative Director Peng Chen and designers Chengpeng Zhu, Xiao Xiao, Lei Wang, and Yunfeng Hu, overcame various challenges to bring this unique gift box to life. Drawing inspiration from the ancient tradition of lion dance, they aimed to capture the essence of expelling evil influences and invoking blessings, creating a design that resonates with both tradition and contemporary aesthetics.

This exceptional gift box design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in Packaging Design. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, this gift box exemplifies the fusion of innovation and tradition, making it a truly remarkable addition to the Chinese New Year festivities.
